About Us

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer can be frightening, stressful and confusing. To help you and your family better understand the treatment options, members of ASTRO, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, created this website to explain to patients, their families and the public how doctors called radiation oncologists use radiation therapy to treat cancer safely and effectively.

The information on this site was created by our medical advisory board made up of physicians and other members of the radiation oncology team with expertise in radiation therapy and on the topics presented. However, this material is informational only and should not be used in place of advice from a medical professional. If you have questions about a specific treatment, please ask your radiation oncologist. You may also want to search our scientific research journal, the International Journal of Radiation Oncology • Biology • Physics, our clinical practice journal, Practical Radiation Oncology or our open access journal Advances in Radiation Oncology.

This site contains limited information on the use of surgery, chemotherapy and other treatments as our physicians are generally not experts in these areas. We encourage you to talk to other specialists, where appropriate, about other treatments you are considering.
